Offshore Section

Objectives

The objectives of the Offshore Section are:

  1. To foster and develop sailing throughout the Corps by organising offshore training, racing, cruising and other activities by encouraging the participation of members in sailing events at all levels.
  2. To maintain standards of proficiency in sailing skills based on the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).
  3. In furtherance of the objectives, to provide offshore yachts for the use of members and for representative sailing events on behalf of the Corps.

How do we do it?

The REME Sailing Club own two medium sized cruising yachts, Craftsman IlI and Seahorse VII, both Hallberg-Rassy 342s, based in the Army Sailing Association Marina at Fort Blockhouse, Gosport.

They are fully compliant with Maritime Regulations to be used for instruction, training or bareboat charter either as a unit sail or as friends and family.

The REME Sailing Club also own a Hunter 707 and Laser SB 3 which are available for racing and recreational sailing. All the offshore boats are based in Gosport at Fort Blockhouse. They are all very well equipped and superbly maintained by the REME Sailing Club Bosun. Consequently they are all used nearly all season, including Christmas holidays. The charge for using your boats is very affordable for charter and where a significant number of events are free or centrally supported.

The REME Sailing Club also make use of boats from Joint Services Adventurous Sail Training Centre (JSASTC) and other service clubs and organisations.

Training

The REME Sailing Club, through the Army Sailing Association runs RYA Offshore Training Courses throughout the year.

There are usually two REME Sail Training Events a year.

One is held at the British Kiel Yacht Club in Germany and consists of offshore sailing and very competitive racing. This event is usually held in the Spring.

The second event is the Solent Sail Training Week which is held in the early Autumn and coincides with the REME Sailing Club End Of Season Rally. This event focuses on RYA Day Skipper and Competent Crew qualifications and also the development of Skippers towards RYA Yatchmaster Coastal and Offshore qualifications. Space permitting, dependants may participate on this STW.

Using the Corps own Halberg Rasseys, the REME Sailing Club will run one RYA Day Skipper and Competent Crew course for retired Corps members and dependants every year. This is done at very competitive rates and is usually done during the Summer Half Term Holiday.

Other courses and qualifications can be organised as required.

Serving personnel may complete RYA training and participate in sailing expeditions at the Joint Services Adventurous Sail Training Centre (JSASTC). The Army Sailing Association also runs courses for servings personnel and dependants.

The Hunter 707 and Laser SB 3 are also regularly raced every Wednesday evening in the RNSA series. For more details please contact 103reme-bhq-0c207@mod.uk.
